Erscheinungsbild als stilprägendes Markenzeichen der Schriftenreihe „Insel-Bücherei “

Wir präsentieren aktuell in einer Vitrine unserer Ausstellung eine Übersicht von Werken des Insel Verlages, die sich literarisch mit den Themen Musik, Komposition und Persönlichkeiten des Genres beschäftigen. Diese Exposition findet im Rahmen von "BuWision 2025 - Ausstellung in Schaufenstern der Innenstadt" statt und widmet sich dem 125-jährigen Jubiläum des in Leipzig gegründeten Insel Verlags, der vor allem für die einzigartig gestalteten Einbände seiner Bücher bekannt ist.

Die Schriftenreihe „Insel-Bücherei“ erschien ab 1912 und zeichnete sich durch ansprechende Cover-Designs aus, das sich auch innerhalb identischer Publikationen bei einer Neuauflage ändern konnte. Durch erschwingliche Preise wurde das Erscheinungsbild schnell zu einem Markenzeichen und die Schriftenreihe zu einem begehrten Sammelobjekt der bibliophilen Kundschaft des Insel-Verlags.

Neben einem individuellen Erscheinungsbild wurde auch an einen praktischen Nutzen gedacht. Die Beibehaltung des Größenverhältnisse unter Verwendung des Querformats ermöglichte die Veröffentlichung von musikalischen Werken unter Berücksichtigung praxistauglicher Anforderungen an das Partiturspiel, ohne dass von der beliebten Gestaltungsweise abgerückt werden musste.

Kulturhistorisch bedeutende Werke im Insel-Verlag– „Manessische Liederhandschrift (Codex Manesse)“

Die Manessische Liederhandschrift zählt im Original zum UNESCO Weltkulturerbe. Faksimilierte und kommentierte Ausgaben wurden über mehrere Jahrzehnte hinweg herausgegeben. Hierzu zählten auch Auszüge in verkleinertem Format für die Schriftenreihe „Insel-Bücherei“.

125 years of Insel-Verlag

This year, Insel-Verlag is celebrating its 125th anniversary. To mark the occasion, we have decided to pay tribute with an exhibition combining Insel's publishing work with the world of music. We gathered various musical instruments, and we put them on display. They are represented or mentioned in the numerous works published by Insel-Verlag and Insel-Bücherei. They bear witness to the cultural practices of specific eras. This exhibition presents a history of music from the Middle Ages to the present day. This is essentially due to the fact that Anton Kippenberg (director of the publishing house at the beginning of the 20th century) took the decision to publish a facsimile of the Codex Manesse in 1922. It is the reference work on music in the Middle Ages, listing the poems and songs of the time. Thanks to him, at the turn of the 20th century, Leipzig, as well as being known for its music, became a landmark for literature and book publishing.

Introduction

Insel-Verlag was founded in 1899 by Alfred Walter Heymel, Rudolf Alexander Schröder and Otto Julius Bierbaum. At that time, it was not yet called Insel-Verlag, but simply ‘Insel’. Alfred Walter Heymel wanted to create something extraordinary. According to Stefan Zweig, Heymel wanted to found a publishing house that focussed on appearance rather than material profit. The aspiration in the design of book covers thus became a trademark. With this guiding principle, Insel-Verlag made a significant contribution to the mass distribution of books. It published some great authors such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Frank Wedekind and Stefan Zweig.

Two years later, in 1901, the name was changed to ‘Insel-Verlag’. The name change was made by Anton Kippenberg, who took over the management of the publishing house. Insel-Verlag focussed on literary and philosophical themes. In 1910, Anton Kippenberg decided to publish the works of famous musical personalities. Two years later, the ‘Insel-Bücherei’ was founded. It was founded in connection with the expiry of copyright protection for Wagner's works, which were henceforth included in the programme.

The Insel-Bücherei also began to publish works on musical greats of the 18th and 19th centuries such as Mozart, Beethoven and the Mendelsohn family. As a result, the publishing house became equally important for artistic, literary and musical works. From today's perspective, the publishing house exemplifies Leipzig's importance as the centre of German book and music publishing in the first half of the 20th century.
